Obituary: Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball creator, has passed away at age 68

Akira Toriyama, a prolific manga creator and artist known for creating Dragon Ball, has sadly passed away at the age of 68. According to his production company Bird Studio, he died in early March due to an acute subdermal hematoma.

Bird Studio shared the news with a message requesting no condolence gifts or visits to the family at this time. Details about any public memorials have not been announced yet.

Born on April 5, 1955, Toriyama's legacy includes not only the iconic Dragon Ball series, which began in 1984 and spawned a vast multimedia franchise, but also his character designs for Square Enix's Dragon Quest and other popular RPGs.

His influence extends beyond his own works, with elements of his style found in a wide range of modern entertainment. Yuji Horii, creator of Dragon Quest, expressed deep sadness at Toriyama's passing.

Toriyama's final projects include a Sand Land video game and the upcoming Dragon Ball Z Daima anime. He is survived by his wife Yoshimi Katō, daughter Kikka, and son Sasuke.
